My wife and I (and dog) currently sail a 34' monohull, but are seriously considering changing to a catarmaran for a variety of reasons. We have researched a number of designs and the Summer Twins 28 and Star Twins 34 seem to be good possibilities for us. Our main planned activity is cruising in UK (South East) waters, but I have plans to sail around the British Isles sometime in future! Are they easy to sail short/single handed? We haven't been able to see either model close-up yet, and would most likely be buying secondhand. I'm trying to gather as much extra info as possible to help us decide what would be best…
Are they produced to a fairly standard specification or is a high degree of owner customisation typical? if so are there any popular modifications, and is anything else good/bad one should look out for? Any special maintenance requirements? Many Thanks,
James
29th May 2007 at 11:04 am #11488Hi James and welcome.
Cant help with those two models although we have recently taken on a HT26. We had a Trident 24 before and the amount of space we now have is amazing. You will find that to.Good luck
29th May 2007 at 5:11 pm #11489Hi James,
I assume you've visited the Multihull Centre web site for the latest specifications?
I was also planning to add an additional page to my website (see link below) containing reviews of both the Summer Twins 28 and Heavenly Twins 36 but haven’t had an opportunity thus far.
Will endeviour to complete later this week.
In the mean time, I hope you find what your looking for.

30th May 2007 at 10:31 am #11490Thanks, We've had a good look at the Multihull Centre website and have some brochures too. Hopefully we will get to see a Star Twins 34 at Multihull World next week. Any comments about how they are to sail and suitabilty for short handed sailing appreciated!

30th May 2007 at 7:07 pm #11491I think I'm right in saying that only one Patterson cat has every capsized, and that was in a force 11 after the single-handed skipper had fallen asleep from exhaustion and left the autopilot on – a wind-shift came along and turned it over. It didn't sink and he survived intact. That was on a 26 footer! Can you imagine how a monohull even ten or 15 foot longer would have faired? So as far as stability goes, both those designs you mention are rock solid when sailed with no more seamanship than you'd need for a monohull.
The Summer Twins 28 is a great layout inside, though has a massive beam and you'll find marinas a challenge (we pay no multihull supplement on the HT27 because the beam isn't excessive). I don't know the StarTwins but I think the Twins 36 is the only genuinely pretty cat on the market. Most new cats manage to achieve the status of @only their mother would call them beautiful”.
Good luck.
