Both rudders on Sally, 1978 HT made by Aquarius have slight splits around their edges where the two halves have slightly come apart. Should I just grind them out and fill with epoxy — or sikaflex if there is some movement. Is it possible to make them water-tight? I'm not sure what there is inside but it feels very heavy. Do the two sides come apart? Any advice from a member who has repairted their rudders would be very welcome. Jim
I have not done any repairs but I do know that they can de-laminate: they are made of ply. My guess would be that it all depends on how bad they are, that is to say how much water they have absorbed. A moisture meter would presumably help but as to what the readings might mean I can't help…not much to go on but a starter for you.
Jim yes the two parts do come apart and often when holed the rudders fill with water. You can take them off, empty and clean them up and rebuild with a layer or two of fibreglass and epoxy resin. Geoff has done several if you want to speak to him in more detal. Cheers. Chrissie
