Our 1978 HT had Sole Diesels fitted in 85. When I bought Sally in 2000 I kept on using them for 6 years with the usual moderate problems you get with older engines. So in 2007 I mistakenly decided to have them reconditioned. Spent a fortune but they havent been satisfactory and still need more spending on them for prop shaft bearings etc, and I'm sick of mending them head first down the compartment. So I have decided to get them out and would be glad to have advice on whether inboard outboards are the best for an HT. We dont often go in marinas but intend to go on the French canals. I'd want something really reliable even if expensive. Any suggestions? Thanks Jim

My friend Eric Lough of HT Mk3 Greylag, has just purchased a new Honda 4 stroke 20hp Extr long shaft outboard to replace his mid engine diesel with a waggly prop. Suggest you contact him on eric@greylag.orangehome.co.uk. Ask him how he is getting on and for any pitfalls etc. He found that at the Southampton Boat Show a 15Hp and 20 Hp were the same price. If a 9.9 4 stroke outboard was specified as the outboard for mk1, 2 HTs I should think a 20 Hp would almost push you into orbit.

If you look around the HTOWOA website you will find a lot of discussion on electric motors as replacements, got its attractions I think. However I have a twin hydraulics set up with a central diesel perkins 18hp. The manoeuverability is fantastic and essential | think. You can't get that with one engine/prop (see also discussions on website), but the one engine twin hydraulic is the cheaper alternative to two diesels and much less costly and heavy and extremely reliable I think. Worth the investment?
Happy canal touring- all that close quarter work you definitely need two props!
