I'm looking at an ocean winds 33 next week !!!! Any info and potential problems to look for ???
26th June 2012 at 10:52 am #11974I have a lot of info on these. As I said before if you want to get hold of me use my e-address or more easily for me ring after e-contact.
28th June 2012 at 11:26 pm #11975Things to examine closely:
Engine and saildrive condition. I have done a full rebuild of the MD7A engines in situ. They run like new now, but not a fun task. Saildrives are susceptible to galvanic corrosion; inspect closely.
Electrical. These are old boats, no telling what you might find. While re-wiring after a lightning strike, I found a lot of “improvements” by previous owners that were downright dangerous.
Steering. If not cleaned and lubed at least every couple of years, the Whitlock gear boxes WILL lock up.
Rudders. Water intrusion from the thru bolts at the gudgeon and pintle connection will lead to swelling and eventually, cracks at the seams.
Winches. If they are the original Gibb units, spares cannot be had new. You're stuck looking for used units on auction sites. These are the only major boat specific items I can think of right now. All in all, a pretty short list for a 30+ year old boat.

3rd July 2012 at 4:05 am #11977twin yanmar ! re-powered ???
3rd July 2012 at 11:45 am #11978Definitely repowered. How are the yanmars mounted? Having trouble visualizing an install with straight shaft. Seems like the prop would not be deep enough, causing cavitation problems?
