There was a short discussion about props a little while ago but no definitive answers. T'other day I spotted an HT with 8″ two bladed props…they looked so dinky that it started me wondering: What was the original spec on twin diesels models and what improvements in design other than folding props could be adopted? Any thoughts or answers welcome.

      Thanks

This company was recommended by an HT owner:

Don't know about original specs, but folding props (or the fab feathering type for the more wealthy!) must be the choice? Advantages outweigh any disadvantages, especially in these net and rope strewn days! My pair are 10 in by 13s variofold by Bruntons. They recommended the size based on the engine (Vetus M2C5- 11 hp). The previous props were only 8″ too and a lot smaller blade area (Sillets) – looked like small bow ties!

Thanks for that,,,very helpful..I saw an HT with twin Vetus engines but have never seen them mentioned in official literature..only Yannies. Are they original fit? Better than the Yannies? Any thoughts?

Hi Dave, I fitted a pair of brand new Vetus 11hp M2C5's to my HT MK 2 “Tigger 2 about 10 years ago, have about 150 hrs on them now, they have been faultless and with a clean bottom will give 6.5 knots at 2000 rpm. I have 3 bladed 13 inch Vetus props. I wish I had specified gearboxes that contra rotated but hindsight is a gift or so they tell me!!. The advantage of the Vetus units is that they are freshwater cooled with heat exchangers and they fitted fine on the bearers.I have never had to worry about no hand start(yanmar) as they fire up very quickly with no fuss even after the winter lay up. I fitted 2 separate battery systems and 2 separate 10 gallon tanks. I have run at 2000 revs for 22 hours non stop and still had 2 gallons left in each tank.
                Cheers

Dave, I can confirm what Ian says and about the benefits of the Vetus engine (Mitsubishi base BTW) and Vetus gear generally. I've just fitted a new 11 hp M2c5 afloat, replacing an older version. The only fiddly bit is fixing the sensor wires onto the alternator. Other than that, she's a plug and use with the console (supplied with the engine). Certainly worth a look if you are re-engining.

Thank you both for your replies…..more grist to the mill!

                      Ian

In reply to your thoughts about contra rotating gearboxes….I spoke with Vetus and mentioned this…they seemed to think that if you fitted the control gear upside down and ran in reverse you would solve the problem..that was their answer to the question rather than an answer to solve your problem if you get my drift. Maybe, if you spoke with them, their explanation would be clearer to you than mine!
