Hi.
I am looking to buy a HT27 and I am wondering if anyone could provide some real life cruising data.
What type of daily runs can we expect from this boat?
Upwind performance. Reaching. Downwind. How does this boat behave in strong winds and building sea?
How does this boat behave sailing downwind with short steep waves?
Any info welcome.

What sort of cruising did you have in mind?Allegro III is a Mk3 HT26 – the HT27 should perform better, but allot would depend on how hard you wish to push it. With questions like those we could be here for a long time! But . .
Daily Runs
Downwind – 100 miles per 24hr.
Wind on or forward of the beam – 80 miles per 24hr.
Hard on the wind – zero miles per 24hr. Your supposed to be cruising so avoid going to windward! These are averages, my best ever 24hr run is 142 miles and the slowest was 10 miles in 24hr. Your daily runs should be somewhere between the two.
The answer to your next two questions could fill a book on heavy weather sailing. What bad weather sailing have you experienced?

Allegro III22nd March 2010 at 11:45 am #11880Hi Mike.
Sailing from Stockholm to Helsinki on our Scampi 30 monohull (at the time) we ended up in gale force winds and a quickly building sea with breaking crests. The Scampi 30 is an ex. 1 Tonner world-champion design based boat and it handled the waves very well, feeling at times like a little Laser gliding down the wave pattern… We were driving the boat hard. How would the HT27 behave in such conditions?
The other real bad weather I experienced was in front of the Brazilian coast near Rio in the 80s sailing a small 23 foot mini tonner. We had extremely quickly a big building sea and triple reefed main, tiny jib, going to windward to Rio. The little boat handled the wind and waves well. Again, what would one do in these conditions with an HT27.
Cheers, Tim

The HT is a remarkably seaworthy boat and has handled all of the extreme conditions I have been in in her stride.BUT.. BUT.. BUT..
Normal seamanship applies re the conditions and circumstances.Mike
