We have recently purchased a 1978 mk3 that has been out of the water for the last 23 years!!!!! and are now starting a rebuild. Can anyone help with details of how the newer boats with a stoop through are strengthened when cutting the holes in the bulkheads and removing the beams that run under the locker. If anyone has completed this we would like as much info as possible please. We are based in Ipswich Suffolk and would like to view to get some ideas from any other East coast HTs, so if any HT owners would be so kind as to let us have a nose about their pride and joy and let us pick their brains that would be great!
Thanks in advance Ivor & Denise (Two's Company)6th July 2009 at 3:07 pm #11804Dear Ivor
I do not know of any of the older HTs having put stoopthroughs in. The height of the hulls (freeboard)was increased when the mark 4a was made and the headroom increased on the HT27. It was at this stage in the design that it was thought there was enough room to be able to stoop through. You would have about four inches less height in your stoopthrough than in those on the HT27. This may or may not be sufficient for you to be comfortable bending that low (and straightening up afterwards). If you go ahead, please do let us know how it turns out. I think you will be the first. Unless someone can tell me different. The alternatvie is to have a fully enclosed cockpit tent so you can walk from back cabin to front in the warm and dry. The big advantage there is that you also get an extra “room” for use during spells of inclement weather. Good luck with whatever you do. Regards

I don't know if it is possible to modify a Mk III but someone will know. I have a MK 1 which when I bought her, had been ashore for 9 years. The drain holes inthe anchor lockers had blocked a, the locckers filled up with water and rotted the forward bulkhead in front of the table. I had to have about 6ft x 2ft cut out, replaced and reglassed both sides. Just check you have no spongy bits in this area. I have renovated most parts of the boat. Try Pip Patterson at The Multihull Centre, Millbrook, Falmouth, for the locker tops.
If I can help with any other queries, please email me on martin@hickson1.wanadoo.co.uk (Dont forget the 1)

Most of the companies have done HT covers at some point or other. There is really no remplate that fis all. They are all so very different in siting of the winches, stays for the mast etc etc that each cover has to be individually tailored to suit your set up. There is a lady near to me at Shoreham who has a good reputation. I will try to get her details for you in case that seems a good idea. You might have luck with someone nearer to you though. I think the going rate for sprayghood and all over cockpit cover is about £1600 give or take. Hope this helps.
Cheers……Chrissie
