The biggest problem we find is when the wind is dead aft. The boat will 'sail' at 2 knots with no sails up. Getting the bows to turn is a bit of a problem. So we always go straight to a hammer head in an unfamiliar marina; then move later. I agree about going slowly astern, much more effective. It also comes with practice. We are in a tight spot in our current marina and always have to do a 3 point turn to get out. It would have sacred me a year ago but now we've got the knack. An electric outboard on the stern is probably an infinitely simpler and cheaper alternative to a bow thruster.
