I wonder if anyone has any info on the design structure of the OW33's…or even the HT's which I guess must have been similar? I am particularly interested in bulkheads..especially mast supporting bulkheads…or any general info in what is under the “skin” so to speak.
2nd June 2013 at 11:47 pm #12023Hi Dave
Are you talking about the mast foot plate (horizontal) or the forward cabin aft wall/ vertical bulkhead ? Don't know OW but HT's i have some understanding of and a set of drawings for. Many have had owner improvements….

3rd June 2013 at 9:37 am #12025Salty…yep that's exactly what 'n where. I know the HT's suffered some “slump” under the mast…John Holloway's FreyaFrey a has a new large lump of timber to provide extra support…I am really trying to figure out what supports the mast itself which, I would guess, is probably the same on the HT and the OW…is it just the combined strength of the ply bulkhead that runs across the boat together with the fibreglass “roof”? Or is there a mighty chunk of something else hidden away? Thanks for the reply.
4th June 2013 at 11:06 pm #12027I will try to dig out the drawings. I know that the newer ht's with the square doors had more mast plate sag issues than the original arched doorway. There was an owners inprovement done to several where the wooden internal door support frame was upgraded to alloy box channel to help the issue. From memory i believe that Yes at mast base there is a heavly laminated plate which combined with the aft bulk head and roof curvature give the strength to support the mast. On mine i have added a stainless steel plate between the mast foot and the fibreglass plate with angle brackets on the underside of the roof onto the aft b/head.
Hope this helps

Cheers

17th June 2013 at 7:17 pm #12028Thank you Mike for coming to the rescue with the upload 🙂
28th June 2013 at 8:22 am #12030Thanks for the upload, Salty.
Had a chat with Pip and what he said and your diagram has cleared a way through the mud! The hatched section at the top of the diagram is in Pip's words “a plywood pad”. So there you have it…Thanks again…”problem” solved.
28th June 2013 at 8:25 am #12032P.s Mike last spotted in Millbrook on Monday waiting for a weather window and wondering whether he would go to Falmouth before hitting the BoB. Another transat looms!
29th June 2013 at 5:10 pm #12033Wish could create a flotilla with him. Be great to wave goodbye to this rock for a while. Some more years to go yet….
30th June 2013 at 8:37 pm #12031Am looking forward to that wave as well! Every day is just one closer to that day!
17th June 2014 at 5:35 am #12034For info the OW mast is supported by a box section made of ply as well as the roof. One side of the box is the bulkhead ..the other three by the cabinet/woodcase in the saloon with the pad providing a seat between this structure and the roof
