Can anyone advise me how to replace a worn cutlass bearing in a mark 3? Thanks, Barry.

Barry in essence you disconnect the prop shaft and withdraw it. Remove the old cutlass bearing, putting the new one onto the shaft and replace. There is a grub screw holding the old one in place which might be hidden under some sealer making it hard to spot. You will need to be sure the prop shaft is correctly aligned when it goes back in. You might need to check either your deep sea seals (if you have them) or the stuffing in the stuffing box where the shaft enters the boat. It's a good time to service that area while you are there. If I have missed a step I will get back to you….Of course you need to do this all in one tide or be aground on the hard. The boat won't float if you are unable to get the job finished by the time the tide comes in, unless you put a bung in the hole. Good luck!! Chrissie

          Barry,

I've done this twice on my Mk IVa (as well as both the deep Sea Seals, and one engine refit and realigning both shafts). As well as what Chrissie says, I would recommend something to drive out the bearing from the engine room side in case the bearing is tight – both mine were. If the bearing is totally within the tube, there is little to grab on from outside and pull the bearing out, so you need something to budge it. I had a piece of thick walled pipe of the right diameter – but be careful that it doesn't wedge inside the bearing. On one bearing, I had to use a hacksaw to cut through the bearing wall – then it came out with mole grips (obviously from the outside). It would be a major challenge to do this in one tide IMHO. So, definitely have a plug ready. The thing that took me the longest was disconnecting the shaft from the gearbox – depends on what coupling you have – so check this out before starting work.
