How can I optimise upwind performance? Staysail? An alternative sail to the huge genoa? Any other tips, please.
13th July 2009 at 2:52 pm #11809Hi Iain
Yes use the staysail for up wind work. Try to set the two sails as much in parallel to each other as you can. This forces the wind between the sails, and as it is constricted where it tries to funnel between the two sails, it increases in speed, helping you along in the process.
Also you can barberhaul your Genoa. This is easiest if you have a flat cut Genoa that only just overlaps the mast. If you set it as usual and add an additional rope in the clew of the sail (alongside the Genoa sheet). Pull that rope across the boat (if the sail is set on port, pull across to Stbd) and cleat off, having pulled in some tension. This will bring the Genoa inboard and give you a better windward angle. Experiment with how much you want to bring it in. Just be careful to remember to loosen the extra rope when going about or you will get in a tangle. If your Genoa is too big this may be difficult to achieve as you will make the sail rub on the shrouds, before you get the best angle. Let me know if you need more detail. Hi Iain,
I don't own a Patterson catamaran but am interested in their sailing performance… (actually considering buying one…)
A bit more work but apparently a drastic improvement is what has been tried by Ryan last year, read his post on adding a bowsprit with a screecher…
I don't know what wind angles you HT owners manage to sail but Ryan mentioned :Managed to go to what I estimate to be 45 degrees to wind, which is a vast improvement on what it was before.
I believe the another purpose of a screecher is improving the light wind sailing capability, you will need less wind to start sailing…
Kind regards, Djeeke[/html]

Sorry, I don't have any hard numbers yet, will have to take her out and test the difference when there is some steady wind. It definitely improves upwind ability esp. in light winds. Used the setup quite often, mostly at night, sailing down to Mexico from California as the wind was light and variable and the screecher covers a reasonably wide angle. I would like to get a, reaching to down wind, gennaker to run off the bowsprit too, still searching the second hand lofts.
