Hi, at last managed to get onto the new site (my fault I forgot both password and username!!)
I'm rebuilding my HT26 and want to resite my battery (ies), now in the starboard cockpit locker by the outboard well, perhaps to the interior starboard storage locker aft of navigation desk. The gas bottle was formerly in the port cockpit locker and might go to the port foredeck locker…
Any comments, recommendations, warnings, advice, criticism welcome…. thanks bill

our batteries are under both 'stairs' in the cabin. The step towards the pantry holds the mainbattery, the step towards the lavatory holds the startbattery.
juup2nd October 2007 at 10:12 pm #11559Bill, I have three batteries in the stbd step down opp the nav station. This is a good site as it is a short run to the battery switch, the fuse panel and solar controller. I guess that is what might come into your consideration. If you are wondering how you fit three batteries – two are standard size 110 deep cycle domestics use, but for engine starting you can get very small but powerful crank batteries. Visit Barden batteries to see what's on offer. As for gas, I have this in the fwd port locker. These obviously have the required drain to fresh air – you must make sure that this cannot get blocked. Some simple wooden cutouts hold the gas cylinders in place. The only issue with this site is that it's quite 'salty' fwd, so there's a bit of rusting of the bottles! Nick
3rd October 2007 at 4:07 pm #11561Hi Gee Bee
Last year on one of the forums was a full thread on the new spun polyester LPG bottles and a couple of people got them Drastic reduction in weight, no corrosion, you could see the level of contents. Only down side at the time was that they were not designed in the same shape and might not fit in your locker.
Bets regards

I think I'm going to have to rebuild the steps to make enough space… if you have some measurements or photos that might help I'd be very grateful cheers bill4th October 2007 at 10:43 am #11562And I forgot to ask.. is the battery box vented overboard? thanks again bill
20th October 2007 at 6:18 am #11563Hi Bill
The measurements of the steps are
59cm wide,
32 to35 (somewhat bigger at one side) deep
33cm highThere are no vents whatsoever, but you could bore a hole towards the enginecompartments (we have twin diesels)
We torture our batteries as much as we can with loading and unloadind but actually I ve never smelled anything other then our typical HT smell (a little polyesterish).
Juup20th October 2007 at 6:02 pm #11564I think the only gas you are likely to get from a battery is hydrogen, so you won't smell it. Plus it's lighter than air so the vent should be at the top.

1st November 2007 at 5:38 pm #11567Hi Bill,
I too have moved my batteries into a new box that forms the starboard step. Dimensions are roughly the same as Juup's. I also built a new gas locker inside the port cockpit locker.
It is made out of 10mm Foam PVCu, screwed together and sealed with silicone. It is also vented outside through the topsides in the vicinity of my bilge outlet. I made the box moveable by containing the sides with 3 rails of 10mm x 20mm foam PVCu. One rail is fixed so that the box cannot move forward and the other two are on opposite sides of the box, allowing it to move backwards and forwards up as far as the front rail. I made a lid for the box and will complete this with neoprene foam seal and a couple of Protec catches. Apparently the overflow outlet should be in 12 to 19mm pipe. Unfortunately mine is in 6mm so at some time I will have to modify it. The box will take 2 camping Gaz bottles.
Where did anyone read about, or have sourced the non metallic gas bottles?

2nd November 2007 at 5:02 pm #11568Hi Martin, I've yet to measure available space in the deck locker but will go for that if possible. Yours is an ingenious solution to securing and sealing the bottles in the cockpit, an something similar will be my second choice, many thanks bill
