I have an elderly 9.9 yamaha in Bird of Azure and was thinking of replacing it with the same until I saw an advert for a HT with a central yanmar diesel driving through a sail drive. Would appreciate any advice.
Thanks Arnie.27th September 2007 at 7:12 pm #11546We had a sillette cat drive on Grey Dove which we have replaced with twin shaft hydraulic drive. (Yanmar 2GM 20) briliant but heavy. Simplest solution: get a good diesel outboard, say 15 hp

Any news on this electric unit yet ??Steve
4th October 2007 at 10:39 am #11551Hi, the new Yamaha 9.9 is much bigger and takes up more room in the outboard well. You can't tilt it fully to get the prop out of the water, hence drag etc. If your boat already has a vertical lift for the outboard this may not be a problem. If anyone has found another solution to this I'd like to hear it… cheers bill
4th October 2007 at 10:46 am #11552Steve – school has had me on weekend duty all flippin term so far! We actually get to the baot for the first time this term next Saturday – can't wait to try it out.
4th October 2007 at 4:54 pm #11547Hi Bill and Pastasimon.
Bill, first where on earth did you manage to get a new 9.9. I hear from everywhere that we can only get the 8 now( Unless you place a special order with Yamaha) and the 8 dosn't really seem to cut it.
I'm thinking of changing to a Honda 15 but fitting Pastasimons new toys for manuverability.
Pasta , bad news on lack of sailing, good news it comes soon. I notice from the web that the cost of these seems to be going up quite considerably.Have a good sail.
Best regards
Steve
14th October 2007 at 3:05 pm #11553Hi,
Didn't mean 'new' new, but new design if you see what I mean… didn't know they'd stopped the 9.9, but I've been told that my 9.9 can be easily modified to 15 so possibly the 'new' 15 is the same(ish) as my 9.9… I'd better stop I'm sounding a complete idiot… bill14th October 2007 at 3:15 pm #11554Hi,
I put 'yamaha outboard' in google and found
http://www.outboards-direct.co.uk/awp-pro/viewdetails.asp?vid=36&rip=1it seems this company is still selling the 9.9…. cheers bill

16th October 2007 at 12:40 pm #11556Hi Steve,
Good luck, I'd be interested to know what you decide to do about tilting/raising the new engine. It's also quite heavy and tricky to manoeuvre in and out of the well so I'm probably going to chop out some of the seat above and put in a removable panel…
The engine runs very quietly and sweetly, but make sure your petrol is really clean (you might think about fitting an extra fuel filter) or the jets will block, leaving you with no tickover/low revscheers bill
20th October 2007 at 6:31 pm #11557Tks Bill, I will check that out
